Prior Henry stood up, “Let me tell you, you don’t want me angry and you don’t want me to leave. I’ll ask you again, how’d you know?”

Still with her back to him, she said, “When we left we went by his shop to say good-bye. That’s when he said his boss told them.”

Prior Henry, “He tell you where’d they go?” Ann’s voice docile, “No.”

“I don’t believe you.” Prior Henry said.

She turned her head and said, “Really, I don’t know.” Her voice anxious, “He didn’t know. Just that his boss told them he was thinking about it.”

“And that’s it, you left and that’s all there’s to it?” Prior Henry’s voice unconvinced.

And again in her pouty voice she said, “Yes.”

Prior Henry knew she wasn’t telling him everything.

Ann didn’t like this Prior Henry. He scared her and he smelled. And to have it over with, she said in a sulky voice, “He told me he’d write.”

Prior Henry, “How can he write if he don’t know where you are?

Still sulking, she said, “He’d write to the butcher in Wikham where they got the hides. He’d keep the letters.”

And that was what Prior Henry been looking for.

Turning halfway, she said, “Now what?”

“Now you tell me about Morvran and Sister Maria,” Prior Henry said. “You help me and I’ll help you.”
